I am pleased to have been able to join Marafiq at such a dynamic phase of its development as a private utility company.
Several large projects are underway, with some already in the commissioning stage. In Yanbu we have the new Yanbu 2 Power and Water Plant, two new Steam Turbine Generation units are coming on-stream, and our wastewater treatment facilities are being expanded. In Jubail we are engaging in an agreement with Sadara to build and operate an exclusive seawater desalination plant within Sadara’s petrochemical complex. The wastewater treatment capacities in Jubail are also being expanded, and a new reverse osmosis seawater desalination plant is in the pipeline. In the near future Marafiq will expand its geographical borders to Ras Al-Khair Industrial City as provider of water utilities.
Through these new projects and ventures we are making sure that we remain one step ahead in our commitment to meeting customer demand. It requires timely investment to cope with growth and to optimize cost of service, which in turn calls for careful, intelligent and accurate anticipation of future demand growth. This means that effective project management is of the utmost importance to Marafiq. Continuing to build our capability and capacity to manage projects within budget and planned timeframes is a constant challenge. We have a solid team working within a finely tuned project delivery framework that is tailored to Marafiq’s unique business requirements. This framework is adjusted when necessary as we identify improved ways of working. We make sure that we learn from our experiences. We learn every day, and one of our most important lessons is that we can never stop searching for and finding ways to keep on improving.
Power and water are essential elements of everyone’s lives. More and more the utility sector is being privatized. In Saudi Arabia, as in many countries, water and power are no longer exclusively state enterprises. The national policy is clear: it is about freeing up and diversifying the economy, and broad-basing the ownership of almost all economic and industrial sectors, including the utility sector.
Marafiq is working within this policy framework to play our role as a socially responsible service provider, to fulfil the needs of our customers, and to make adequate provision for future utility demand. We are working not only to provide sustainable, reliable and cost-effective water services, but also to conserve water as a scarce and invaluable natural resource. This we do by working very carefully and economically with water and wastewater, increasing desalination capacity, providing efficient sanitation services, improving the treatment-consumption rate of wastewater and optimizing wastewater reuse.
In the power sector we are working to provide highly efficient and reliable electricity services at the least possible economic, social and environmental costs. Our aim is to increase generation capacity and enhance the power sector’s role in adding value to our national resources.
In our firm resolve to fulfil the needs of our customers and meet utility demand well into the future, we never lose sight of the safety of our people and everyone who works with us. Marafiq has developed sound safety practices within a well-defined policy framework and a lively safety culture that have enabled us to reach several major safety milestones. Constant focus on safety is part and parcel of our daily work.
I sincerely hope that you will enjoy your visit to our website. Please spend as much time as you can with us in our internet home.
